Chapter 36 – Reilly

“I didn’t realise the FBI worked on Sundays, Cole.” Reilly smiled as she answered the call. “I thought you suits were strictly Monday to Friday, office hours only, kinda people.”

“Oh, if only that were the truth then maybe I wouldn’t have been divorced three times already.” Cole chuckled. “I could have saved a fortune in alimony.”

“To what do I owe the pleasure of your call?” She stepped into her bedroom, closing the door behind her.

“I’m afraid there’s not much pleasure in my call, if you want the truth.” The laughter in Cole’s voice had vanished. “I’m calling about tomorrow’s meeting with the young women in your care.”

“Are you calling to arrange what time you’ll be here?” Reilly frowned. “Only I’m not sure what time Sara is going to be available.”

“That’s not exactly why I’m calling.” Cole sounded uncomfortable. “Unfortunately, a call came in this morning from Arizona, from one of the agents who’s been working on this case. He’s advised that some of their law enforcement people are flying to Philly tomorrow. It’s some fancy special unit, with a name I forgot as soon as he told me. One of those special acronym units. Anyway, they want to sit in on the interviews.”

“Why don’t you sound very happy about that?” Reilly asked. “Isn’t it something they normally do?”

“Sometimes it happens, if the case originated in their jurisdiction, or if there’s a reason why they have a special interest. But I can’t see how that applies in this case, because the intelligence originated here, and three other states have already been involved, without asking to be present during subsequent interviews. I guess what really worries me, is that we’re aware that some of the clients who frequent these places are also in law enforcement.” Cole sighed. “I’m always worried that when we let people in we don’t already know, we could potentially be inviting someone connected to the criminals, right into our inner sanctum.”

“Are you kidding me?” Reilly gasped. “You think these people might be connected?”

“Well, truthfully, it’s highly unlikely. It’s probably just my paranoia kicking in again.” Cole was obviously trying to backtrack, realising that he must have spooked her, but he wasn’t convincing. “They’re probably all legitimate, and everything is above board.”

“But you wouldn’t be able to tell, even if it wasn’t. Right?” Reilly checked. “In which case, there’s no way you are bringing them here to do the interviews. Candy and I will bring the women to your office in the morning.”

“That was what I was about to suggest.” Cole agreed. “Only we won’t be able to offer you any protection while you’re driving them in. We don’t want your involvement recorded, or your location discovered, so it would be best if you arranged for someone to travel with you when you bring them here to the federal building.”

“I have Patrick’s son staying here at the moment.” Reilly frowned. “I could ask him to help. He’s ex-military and can probably handle all-comers. He won’t be armed, but otherwise he’s a perfect bodyguard.
